Marble gods
Do not appeal to me
Trying to intimidate
Our body and mind

Fragile being
That is me
Shown on black clay plinths
Charcoal drawings on paper
I can see when walking through
This museum

They touch me inside
Make me feel as beautiful
And strong as the life model
Who stood for me

Yvette
Love of my life

Claudia Sacher: Yvette’s People, 2022 (sculptures made from charcoal drawings on paper, inserted into black self-drying clay)

For YVETTE’S PEOPLE, Claudia has created sculptural life-drawing cutouts and stuck them into self-drying clay blocks, which serve as plinths to be displayed in the rooms on one side of the Cottage…

… while on the other side of the Cottage, well, there’s a playful little surprise awaiting the viewer….

Claudia Sacher- Bio and Artist statement

“I am a visual artist working in the medium of drawing, performance and installation. Born in 1966 in Oberhausen, Germany, I completed a diploma in Graphic Design at the Folkwang Universität der Künste in Essen in 1992 (Dreidimensionales Gestalten und Sculpture Prof. Rolf Lieberknecht, Drawing and Illustration Prof. Otto Naescher). Between 1992-1994 I attended the performance intermedia class of Prof. Hans Breder in Iowa City, USA, before moving back to Essen in Germany where I was part of Kunsthaus Essen for two years. During that time I had a solo exhibiton in Staedtische Galerie Museum Folkwang and was later part of a group exhibition. In 2003, I moved from Essen to the North East of England and have since exhibited intensively in the area. I am married with two children and live in Hexham, not far from Newcastle upon Tyne.

“Writing poetic texts, playing piano, producing drawings and paintings on site, making video sketches, collaborating with dancers, and showing short performances are all part of my artistic practice. Grounding the ephemeral in everyday life runs through everything I produce. I often dismantle, erase, or recycle all materials used in one project and use them for the next project. The spaces in which I work are an integral part of my practice. I use spaces offered to me by generosity or which I discover by chance. When I have finished a project, I seek out another space which speaks to me.

“I also have experience in working with people who are affected by brain injuries and dementia. Since 2019 I have collaborated on a regular basis with the artist photographer Karen Melvin and with the dance artist Esther Huss.”
