Marisa Polin :  City Break

at Collective Gallery

(‘Ballroom’)  39 Eastcheap, London EC3M 1DT

6-10 September, 1-6pm (and by appointment)

Private View Thursday 7th September, 5-8pm

Marisa Polin reflects on the space we inhabit and the city within ourselves. The artist from Mexico City deconstructs reality into the abstract, revealing its essence. In her sculptures she highlights the tension of materials like metal, felt or plastic, forcing opposing forces to coexist in a delicate balance on the edge of rupture.

Marisa Polin :   L I M I N A L

Small House Gallery

(Throughout September 2023, viewable by appointment, in a private home, South London)

Marisa Polin’s steel structures explore the boundary between polarities. Polin forces opposing forces to coexist in a delicate, almost impossible balance that could explode any minute: the fleeting instant versus the eternity, the strength versus the fragility, the feminine juxtaposed with the masculine. Polin deconstructs real things into the abstract, revealing their essence.

Backed by a vibrant, geometric, and minimalist language, she delves into themes of intimacy, home, and memory, inviting onlookers to witness the emotional dialogues.

LIMINAL is installed across two Small House Gallery dollhouse micro galleries curated by artist Eldi Dundee.

Artist statement with Bio

“Art has been my motivation since I was a girl in Mexico City. While studying at La Esmeralda and San Carlos, I met a generation of teachers and colleagues that still inspire me. A strong curiosity drove my travels, and I ended up living in Europe. My studios are in London and The Hague, but I work as well on the move, in the forest, a garden or other public spaces. I am a traveller that bridges between cultures.

“I focused on the sculpture side of ceramics when studying at Sir John Cass in London. In The Hague, I studied painting at the Royal Academy and developed into a professional artist.

“Over the years, when my life took a sharp turn, so did my artwork and my politically-themed paintings transformed into direct activism and performance and later into an internal crusade experimenting with geometric forms and developing a new personal abstract language. I enrolled in filmmaking studies at Central Film School in London where I specialised in production and production design. In collaboration with a group of international creatives, we made political documentaries and fictional short films, They were a great experience that brought us to festivals around the world.

“I collaborate with various artists’ groups, realise projects and exhibit internationally. I also have organised and participated in many artists’ residencies.

“My actual art pieces while studying for a Masters in Sculpture at the Royal College of Art revolve around the themes of home, intimacy, memories, belonging, games, playfulness and fate with a geometric, minimal, abstract language. Video and photography are used not only for recording work but also as part of my body of work. Recently, processes and materials research has become of great importance. I am experimenting with languages and body expressions through performances, interviews and podcasts.”
